For the first hat in this project, I’m going to try this bow tie cloche pattern that I found on Ravelry. It’s pretty cute, don’t you think?
Pattern: “Bow Tie Cloche” by the Bellsisters Design Shop
Yarn: unknown (sorry!) – I lost the label but it is really thin and silky. I bought two skeins of it from Woolcott & Co. over a year ago and unfortunately they have closed since then. ![]()
Needles: size 2 dpn’s, size 3 – 16″ circulars
I cast on 130 stitches on 1/4/2011 … here is a photo at row 9 on 1/5/2011 (yes, I know it’s going kind of slow … but it IS 130 stitches of REALLY thin yarn so hey …)
In case you are wondering … yes, I am finding it super difficult to do this on double pointed needles (dpns)!! These are 6″ and the yarn is very silky so they tend to start to slide off at the ends. Next time I try this pattern, I’ll definitely start on circulars.

1.13.11 — After being sick and staying home from work on Thursday, I managed to accomplish 2 rounds of the lace pattern (10 rows per round). I think it’s really starting to take shape and the lace part is quite pretty. As you can see, I decided not to go with two colors of yarn like it calls for in the pattern. It’s kind of difficult to tell but there is slight striping that naturally happens with this yarn. I have one more round of the lace pattern to go (it is definitely becoming easier to get through each row as I go on) before I start the decreasing of the crown. Hopefully it’ll get done this weekend!

1.16.11 — The hat is finished! Hooray!! I really like how it turned out with this yarn. I think the silky yarn and subtle color changes give it a little bit of sophistication so I’m not going to make a bow to attach to the side like it shows in the pattern. It was a pretty simple pattern overall so I think I’ll try making myself one of these too.

February.2011
February’s chemo cap pattern is going to be a real simple pattern, so I am going to double-dog-dare myself to make at least two of these for this month’s goal. Besides, I have enough Debbie Bliss Cashmerino yarn to … well … do it. Ha!
The pattern is available here and it can be done either flat or in the round. Now the hardest part? Choosing the color combinations!
ETA: I ended up completing two hats for February. I used a dark burgundy and cream color combination for the striped hat (pattern link above) and I think it turned out pretty cute. I did 3 rows for the top and bottom stripes and just two for the middle one.
For the second hat this month, I kind of made up a pattern by casting on 85 stitches, then doing a seed stitch pattern for 8 or 9 rows, then purling one row, and finishing by just knitting the rest until decreasing. I like how it turned out because the seed stitching is subtle enough, but it adds a little bit of a flair to the edge of the hat. (Oh and I used size 8 needles with the Debbie Bliss cashmerino aran yarn – only 1 skein! – for the light blue hat.)

For March’s hat, I plan to make something much more masculine. I found this pattern through Ravelry which is by a guy named Jesse Loesberg who created it shortly after moving to my hometown of the Bay Area. (Ahhh, yes, a male knitter! In San Francisco! With a blog!! And TWINS that he KNITS clothing for!!! Gahhhhhh!) I’ve never done a raglan-style decrease so this will also be a learning experience for me this month. And again, another reason to use the wonderfully soft Debbie Bliss cashmerino aran yarn sitting in my stash. I can’t wait to cast on to start this one come Tuesday (March 1st)!
