lord hobo (cambridge)

After running around doing a bunch of errands on Saturday with my husband, we were famished and shared a craving for beef (particularly a good burger).  It was fun being able to actually “go out” with him after being cooped up at home for about a week, so we wanted to try some place we’ve never been to before.  I remembered hearing that Lord Hobo had good food, but I also remembered the one time we tried to go there a night a few months ago and not being able to get a seat because it was so crowded.  So since it was only about 5 pm we headed over (and after I found their menu on the Blackberry and started drooling over the choices) and luckily managed to find a parking spot nearby (that was another reason we never really were able to go there before this day – it’s mostly residential parking and the metered spots are like gold).

knitting :: baby hat and socks

As you can see, I’ve been on a knitting spree lately.  Thank goodness the carpal tunnel in my wrists has dwindled down enough so that I can get about an hour in before the tingling begins (compared to ten minutes before).  Luckily, too, I managed to find this super easy baby sock pattern that is worked from the top down and with the option to make the heel and toes in a contrasting color.  I made these two sets for two coworkers who are expecting baby boys this winter – hopefully this cashmerino yarn will help keep the little ones warm!

On the socks:  I did the top-down version and where it says to knit around until leg is desired length, I knit 10 rows.  When you get to the “sock foot” part and it says to work in stockinette until the desired length, I did 2 rows.

On the hat:  The hat is the umbilical cord pattern from the “Stitch ‘n Bitch” book.   I started alternating the yarn colors so that I would knit 2 with the gray, 2 with the green, 2 with the gray, etc. (while carrying the other strand along the way) and then do the opposite on the next row. I like how it kind of looks like little hearts!

Again, two very simple patterns to work with and I know I’ll have to crank out a set for our little girl very soon too.

s’mores cookie bars (a recipe)

My sister did an evil thing.  She introduced me to Pinterest.  Was I on the slow boat before discovering this?  Probably.  But now, I have a new excuse to use as a time suck: pinning inspiring ideas and things onto boards that I can drool over later.  Now my goal is to actually do or make some of these inspiring things that I’ve found by other members’ pins.  One of which was to make these warm toasted marshmallow s’mores bars that someone pinned.

If you click on the link you’ll see that it’s a really simple recipe, no doubt.  But my one problem was the idea of using cookie mix because well, we all know that I’m a food snob, and I like to make things from scratch.  Call me crazy, I know – I’m nine months pregnant and shouldn’t be on my feet at all – but I couldn’t resist the challenge (put upon myself of course) of creating these bars from scratch.

So I decided to start on this challenge by creating a cookie base and turned to what I consider my personal bible for all things baked and cooked: Mark Bittman’s “How to Cook Everything” cookbook.  (Yes, you’ve heard me sing its praises before – I love this thing.)  I thought about the finished product and realized that it’s essentially like a deconstructed chocolate chip cookie but with toasted marshmallows on top, so I started with a chocolate chip cookie base.  I followed the Betty Crocker recipe about adding the graham cracker crumbs to stick with the s’mores concept.

knitting :: first baby sweater

It’s definitely not perfect (don’t even let me get started on pointing out the imperfections) but it’s the first baby sweater I’ve knitted for our anticipated bundle of joy.  It’s my second time working with this pattern after making one earlier this year for a friend’s baby.  I really like how simple the pattern is to follow and that it’s all knit in one piece.

october nor’easter

Before I moved to Massachusetts from California, I had never even heard of a “Nor’easter“.  I never thought that almost thirteen years later I would be experiencing one while nine months pregnant and crossing my fingers that my water wouldn’t break in the middle of the night.  (Side note – although, I’m sure there was at least one woman who did go into labor in the middle of this messy storm last night.)  Anyway, our power did go out a couple of times during the night but luckily was repaired by Nstar and it came back on around 6:30 this morning.  Whew.  We have a couple of downed wires in our driveway so we are waiting for the city’s public works office to dispatch someone to come move those.  But other than that we only have a few downed tree branches to worry about, as illustrated in the series of photos below.

Our back porch when the storm started, and then about 15 hours later.
