card making :: bloomin’ love

I have to admit that sometimes I don’t like all of the stamps that are included in a stamp set. If I’m lucky there’ll be a couple of components that stand out to me enough to make it worth buying the entire set, and in this case it was the little flowers and banner that caught my eye. I used the flowers to do another one of my favorite techniques: creating a stamped background image on a card.

Another thing that I like to do (especially with the Stampin’ Up ink pads) is come up with unusual color palettes that are just a little bit out of my comfort zone.  Know what I mean?  I find that I tend to gravitate to my favorite color palette a lot: shades of teal, coral, and grey.  So this time I went with a mix of purples, pinks, and threw in a mustard-y yellow just to change it up a little bit.  And I have to say that I really like the way the colors came together.

So let me go back and explain the motivation behind this card. I heard about the Handmade Valentine Exchange through a friend and decided to sign up this year.  The task is to send a handmade valentine to ten strangers and spread a little bit of love during this holiday. My list included recipients in New York, South Carolina, California, Nevada, Texas, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Italy, and Poland!  I decided to use this stamp set even though it doesn’t contain a stamp that specifically says “happy valentine’s day”, but I had an old one that kind of fit into the banner.  And that’s another thing that’s so great about clear stamps: it makes it very easy to stamp in layers, which is what I did to create the sentiment for the cards.

Since there was no real need to write a lengthy message in the card I decided to make them flat instead of folded, and wrote a quick little message on the back.  I can’t wait to see the valentines that arrive in our mailbox this week!
